Interview - FUELBLOODED

Martín: Hi there! First of all introduce you and your band FUELBLOODED to our readers.

Peter Brinkman: Hey Martin! Well, first of all, thank you very much for your interest in Fuelblooded. Fuelblooded was formed back in 2002, from the remains of a Dutch cult underground band called Sacramental Sachem. The guys in the band back then wanted to do something else. More thrash, and a fresh start. This, along with some line up changes resulted in the birth of a new name, Fuelblooded. This new band released a promo in 2002 which was received very well. After that they released their debut cd in 2006 called “Inflict The Inevitable”. Fuelblooded went on the road and did a lot of live shows in Holland, and also a short tour of the UK. However, late 2006 they parted ways with singer Vital. This is where I entered the band. New songs were written en and a new album was recorded in 2008. This is “Off the Face of the Earth”, the best Fuelblooded album so far...

M: Your new album “Off The Face Of The Earth” is full of influences such as Thrash
Metal or Death Metal. How do you describe your own style?

P: This is always a difficult question, because you always see your style as being the ‘Fuelblooded’ style. But I guess it’s pretty safe to say that we play intense metal, often very heavily influenced by thrash metal, and sometimes influenced by death metal. Melody is always very important, but Fuelblooded is always pumping the blood through the metal veins in a way that you cannot hide. There’s nowhere to run. It’s pounding on your eardrums!

M: Is there an evolution from your first effort?

P: Of course there is. First of all I am a totally different singer than Vital was, who did the vocals on the first album. But also the quality and structure of the song material has evolved. I like to describe the new material as more solid and compact, without necessarily making the songs shorter.

M: How were the recording sessions of the album? Are you satisfied with the results?

P: The recording sessions were very intense and time consuming, but they worked out great. We recorded all the guitars ourselves and went to the studio for the drums and vocals. After that we went to Sweden to work with Jonas from Scar Symmetry who gave us a killer sound that totally fits the music. Yes, you could say we are very satisfied with the endresult.

M: Is there a main concept behind the album? What about the lyrics?

P: There isn’t a main concept behind the lyrics, but when we were finished with the writing of all the lyrics we discovered that “Off the Face of the Earth” actually is a perfect album title, because it captures the red chord that runs through all the lyrics. This was not done intentionally, it is just something that can happen when different persons in the band are involved with writing the lyrics. Typically, not all the lyrics are reality based; we tend to wrote about a lot of different stuff – some based on personal experience, some more observing of a certian situation in the world and also some totally fictive lyrics. Still it is possible to have a red chord running through all the lyrics. Magical ;)

M: You shot a video for the song “The End Starts Here”; how was the experience?

P: Great! We were able to use the Dynamo club in Eindhoven, my home town, as a setting for the ‘live concert’ clip. We gathered some friends, opened up the bar and had a good time. We had to do a lot of takes so it was kind of a heavy day for us all and especially for the muscles in our necks, but the end result is great! I think it looks excellent, full of action - it fits the music very well. So far, it seems to be going down well with the public too, so all the better for us!

M: What can we expect about FUELBLOODED´s live on stage?

P: You can expect a band that knows how to play, and really wants to ‘beam out’ all their energy towards the audience. We’re giving 100% every time, bang our heads off, maybe crack a couple of jokes here and there and just try to give our best performance possible and make sure everybody has a good time. If everything goes well, we rock everybody in the audience to little pieces! ;)

M: Tell us about the Metal scene in Holland nowadays, how do you see it from the inside?

P: The metal scene in Holland is still going strong! We have a lot of great bands making great music in almost all metal genres. When you realize how small Holland is, you can really say we have a strong scene. So many good bands come from Holland. However, we feel for Fuelblooded it is time now to start looking more beyond the borders of the Netherlands. We would love to come to Spain and show our skills! And not just Spain; we wanna play everywhere we can!

M: Can you choose two bands or artists with different styles that influenced
you to be a musician?

P: This is of course very personal and not the same for the members of Fuelblooded, but for me I must say that Iron Maiden and Metallica were two bands that I grew up with that were very important to me. But also bands like Sacred Reich, Death Angel, Forbidden, Candlemass and many many more! I still get influenced every day though, by metalbands, but also by non-metalbands. Music is just a big inspiration to create even more music.

M: Thank you very much for your time. Here you have space to write what you want as farewell.

P: Yes I do. ¡Muchas gracias para su interes en Fuelblooded! Nosotros esparamos que podemos juegar en Espana muy pronto. Mira a nuestro pagina de My Space para canciones nuevas y nuestro video. ¡Salud y hasta pronto!
